DiskDrill – File recovering made easy

Let’s say it was a coincidentally click that made me find this great piece of software. As the headline tells you, this article is about DiskDrill – a software to recover files that may be deleted by accident.

Why you might need it?

I don’t say you need it. But from time to time it may have happened to you, that you deleted some files you needed. So DiskDrill is a possibility to recover such files.

Great features, great possibilities ?

DiskDrill provides you with a lot of features and is easy to use.

Best thing of all: When you start DiskDrill the first time, it shows you – appart from the dialog for admin privilegs – a aweseom quick tutorial how to use the software.

Everything is described and declared in full details. And of course it makes a lot of fun reading that tutorial. It is made out of 9 well designed pictures that shows you all you need to know

As you can see in the screenshot there’s really everything explained. (Looks quite great – isn’t it ?)

What does DiskDrill do ?

It scans your HDD . Binary streams of sectors on the hard disk. The big problem about that is, that you can get your file back. But no properties, no filenames or locations. The reason for this behavior is the HFS/HFS+ file system – It is not made for recovering files. This is why the developers created a tool for that – The Recovery Vault

Recovery Fault

This part of DiskDrill must be activated for one or more particular partitions on your harddisk. Whenever it is enabled it logs and saves data when you delete any file. Therefore any file (if possible) can be recovered with its last properties, name and location.

This feature is NOT enabled by default!

DiskDrill in action

This is the welcome Screen – it shows you every relevante information on DiskDrill.

Here you can decide what to do. Whether you want to protect your Files with Revovery Vault or do a scan to recover some of your recently deleted files.

Licence related stuff will also be shown on this screen when DiskDrill hits out of the beta status. You can even acces the knowledge base, see the tutorial again or visit the developer’s site.

The recovery screen shows every single HDD which is currently plugged in on your Mac. It even shows my iPhone :P

Attention: You can enable to show hidden partitions either. Which means you can see the journaled partition from a journaled filesystem. Don’t do anything stupid with it!!!

When you select the partition and click the green button for scanning, DiskDrill will scan the whole partition for deleted files. (Be patient this might take quite a while!)

The scan dialog shows you under runtime how many deleted files have been found.

The best of all ?

It’s free. At least while it is in BETA!

My thoughts ?

I like it. It has a lot of features and I think it can be very useful, so i can recommend it to you ;)
